Hymn 780 from Wonder Love and Praise

Music and Music Notes by Danny Corneliussen and Rick Curtis

(If you do not see the music mp3/mp4 icons below, please click on the June 14, 2020 title line above.)

For this week, we are very lucky to have some music that Rick Curtis recorded for us on mandolin. Below are his two selections and his notes about the pieces. A very big thank you to Rick!

Prelude from Cello Suite #1 G major

The Prelude from Bach’s Cello Suite #1 in G major is without a doubt one of the most recognized cello pieces of all time. This was the prelude to the first of six suites J. S. Bach composed for unaccompanied cello. I transposed it to the key of D major to fit more easily with standard mandolin tuning. – Rick

Kneel Before Him

Kneel Before Him was written for mandolin by Chris Thile while a young lad. I performed it on my octave mandolin which has the same tuning as a mandolin only an octave lower in pitch. Thile wrote the melody heard in the first and third sections of the piece. The middle section is my variation of that melody. – Rick

And then, if anyone is interested in looking at a hymn for this week, hymn 780 from the green book (Wonder, Love, and Praise) fits very well with the Gospel lesson from the lectionary this week (Matthew 9:35-10:8). The tune for this hymn you’ll probably recognize since it appears a few times in our two hymnals. Here are the words (by Jeffery Rowthorn, 1978) along with what I worked out for an organ accompaniment. Thanks everyone! – Danny

Hymn 780

Lord, You give the great commission:
Heal the sick and preach the Word.
Lest the Church neglect its mission,
And the Gospel go unheard,
Help us witness to Your purpose
With renewed integrity,
With the Spirit’s gifts empower us
For the work of ministry.

Lord, You call us to Your service:
In My name baptize and teach.
That the world may trust Your promise,
Life abundant meant for each,
Give us all new fervor, draw us
Closer in community.
With the Spirit’s gifts empower us
For the work of ministry.

Lord, You make the common holy:
This My body, this My blood.
Let us all, for earth’s true glory,
Daily lift life heavenward,
Asking that the world around us
Share your children’s liberty
With the Spirit’s gifts empower us
For the work of ministry.

Lord, You show us love’s true measure:
Father, what they do, forgive.
Yet we hoard as private treasure
All that You so freely give.
May Your care and mercy lead us
To a just society.
With the Spirit’s gifts empower us
For the work of ministry.

Lord, You bless with words assuring:
I am with you to the end.
Faith and hope and love restoring,
May we serve as You intend
And, amid the cares that claim us,
Hold in mind eternity.
With the Spirit’s gifts empower us
For the work of ministry.
