The four weeks leading up to Christmas Day (Feast of the Nativity) are known in the Church as the season of Advent. Advent, meaning “coming” (Latin adventus), looks with two eyes to the coming of Christ: in this season we recall an event in the past—Jesus’s birth—but also we look to the future, to when Christ will come again to establish the Kingdom of God on earth. The church observes this season through a variety of traditions, including the use of the color purple in worship, the progressive lighting of an Advent wreath, and service of Lessons and Carols.
